Acquired competences

● Acquisition of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the main areas of reducing harmful emissions during the operation of power equipment

Learning outcomes

● Know the legal framework;● know the types and sources of environmental pollution;● ability to determine the content of major toxic substances in exhaust gases;● the ability to apply methods and means of reducing harmful emissions in the operation of power equipment;● the ability to design new models of devices that reduce the impact of power equipment on the environment.

Programme of the academic discipline

Module 1.
Content module 1: Energy consumption and environmental issues in the energy sector.

Topic 1: General issues. Basic concepts and definitions. Energy and life. Energy and civilisation. Energy is the main problem of our time.
Topic 2. Energy consumption and its indicators as criteria for the well-being of society. The use of energy resources in the world.
Topic 3. Energy and ecology. The main provisions. Energy and the biosphere. Interrelation of technological, energy and environmental aspects of energy.

Content module 2. Physical and chemical basis of toxin formation.

Topic 4. General theory of combustion. The role of organic fuels and the basics of combustion theory.
Topic 5. Features of combustion of hydrocarbon fuels.
Topic 6. Patterns and mechanisms of formation of toxins and carcinogens. Characteristics of harmful substances in fuel combustion products and their impact on the environment. The general mechanism of formation of carbon-containing toxic elements in GHG. The mechanism of formation of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, carcinogenic hydrocarbons, soot particles, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides.

Content module 3: Environmental testing and regulation of toxins

Topic 7. Methodology of environmental testing. Principal features of environmental testing. Types of environmental testing. Standardisation of toxicity testing. Features of environmental testing objects.
Topic 8. Methods and means of testing power equipment for toxicity. Environmental testing as part of power plants under standardised conditions. Measurements during environmental testing. Determination of the amount of major toxins in gas emissions. Research environmental testing.
Topic 9: Diagnostic operational control of power equipment for toxicity. Principles of environmental diagnostics. Definition of a diagnostic test. Construction of an optimisation algorithm for performance control based on the results of environmental tests. Selection of environmental diagnostic modes.
Topic 10. Normalisation of environmental indicators of power equipment. General provisions of toxics standardisation. Standardisation of environmental performance of road vehicles. Standards for environmental performance of engines of off-road vehicles [pp. 216...2522].

Topic 11. The role of law in regulating environmental relations between nature and society.
Topic 12: State environmental policy in Ukraine.
Topic 13. Legislative acts in Ukraine on environmental protection. The Law of Ukraine ‘On Environmental Protection’. Law of Ukraine ‘Protection of Atmospheric Air’. Law of Ukraine ‘On Transport’. The Law of Ukraine ‘On Alternative Energy Sources’ and the Decree of the President of Ukraine ‘On Measures for the Development of Fuel Production from Biological Raw Materials’.
Topic 14: Legal guarantees of environmentalisation.
