Educational and research laboratories

In addition to specialised classrooms, the department has five teaching and research laboratories:

● laboratory for research and testing of internal combustion engines;
● Laboratory for testing and studying the design of ICE units and power plants;
Laboratory for thermal and mechanical measurements;
Laboratory for testing and research of fuel equipment;
● laboratory for production and testing of alternative fuels.

These laboratories are equipped with 8 operating ICEs (marine diesel generators D50 (6HN 31.8/33), 6HN 25/34, 6HN 13/14, marine diesel compressor DK-2, power tractor units SMD-19, 8HN 12/12 (Kamaz-740), YamZ-204, Ford 2. 0 TDCI, 1CH 8.5/11, as well as test benches for testing internal combustion engine units and apparatus, where students perform real laboratory work and research.

All laboratory stands are equipped with modern measuring instruments and devices that are timely tested and certified by the state, which allows us to obtain reliable and reliable measurement results. Data processing is carried out using personal computers, the software for which was developed by the department's teachers with the participation of the most capable students.

The requirements of safety and fire safety regulations are observed. Initial and ongoing briefings on safety and fire safety are conducted. The head of the department and heads of laboratories are responsible for this work.

  • The laboratory for research and testing of internal combustion engines is one of the oldest at NUOS.

  • The engine room has a number of full-size stands with internal combustion engines used for scientific, research, educational and demonstration purposes.

  • Students test the engines with the measurement of the main parameters of their operation, including the recording of the indicator diagram of the work process

Training and research bench
based on the KAMAZ-740 engine (8CHN 12/12)

The experimental bench based on the KAMAZ-740 (8CHN 12/12) engine with a modified air supply system was created in the laboratory of the NUOS ICE. The stand provides the possibility of performing a wide range of research works, namely:

1. To study the indicator process in the engine cylinder.
2. To test the engine in stationary operating modes in the range of crankshaft rotation speed 800...2600 rpm at a power of 0...150 kW.
3. Record oscillograms of transient processes occurring in the engine cylinder and its systems: working fluid pressure in the engine cylinder, air pressure in the receiver, exhaust gas pressure in the exhaust manifold, fuel pressure in the high-pressure pipeline in front of the fuel injector, vacuum on the air flow meter, resistance at the exhaust.
4. Test the engine in unsteady-state operating modes, such as: sharp acceleration and braking under load (with the ability to adjust the load from zero to maximum), load build-up and load shedding with the regulator control lever in a constant position.
5. Investigate the working process with periodic shutdown of some cylinders, as well as with flexible regulation of the charge air cooling subsystem.

Test bench for the study of internal combustion engine diagnostics based on the Ford 2.0 TDCi engine

The test bench based on the Ford 2.0 TDCi automotive diesel engine is created in the laboratory of the department with the involvement of students. The main purpose of the bench is to teach students how to diagnose modern internal combustion engines using modern tools.

The source of compressed air is a rotary vane compressor driven by a direct transmission from a SMD-19 diesel engine. The capabilities of the test bench allow obtaining air with an absolute pressure of 150 kPa and a flow rate of 0.1 to 0.5 kg/s. The air temperature in front of the experimental ONP front is about 110...130 °C.

Laboratory for the production and testing of alternative fuels

The Laboratory for the Production and Testing of Alternative Fuels was created on the basis of the Centre for Advanced Energy Technologies of the National University of Shipbuilding and is located near the building of the Main Building of the NUOS at 9 Heroiv Ukrainy Ave.

Over the past 5 years, the laboratory has carried out 2 state-budget research projects by young scientists under the guidance of the department's staff (O. Mitrofanov and A. Proskurin).

The laboratory has 5 research experimental benches for studying the peculiarities of obtaining alternative fuels and their use in modern internal combustion engines. The research results were used in 5 candidate and 1 doctoral dissertations.
