Acquired competences
● Ability to solve complex specialised problems and practical work in the field of power engineering or in the process of study, which involves the application of the theory of heat and mass transfer, technical thermodynamics, hydrogen and gas dynamics, energy transformation (conversion), technical mechanics and methods of relevant sciences and is characterised by complexity and uncertainty of conditions.Knowledge and understanding of the subject area and understanding of professional activities.● Ability to determine the operating modes of energy and heat-technological equipment and apply methods of rational use of raw materials, energy and other types of resources.Ability to determine the possibility and feasibility of using alternative fuels.● Ability to safely operate internal combustion engines and their components.
Learning outcomes
● Apply engineering technologies, processes, systems and equipment in accordance with the speciality 142 Power Engineering; select and apply appropriate standard analytical, computational and experimental methods; correctly interpret the results of such studies;● Identify, formulate and solve engineering problems in accordance with the speciality 142 Power Engineering; understand the importance of non-technical (society, health and safety, environment, economy and industry) constraints;● Use equipment, materials and tools, engineering technologies and processes, as well as understanding their limitations in solving professional problems;● Recommend alternative fuels for use in internal combustion engines, taking into account aspects of the consequences of the use of these fuels for the environment, society, health, safety and economy;● Operate internal combustion engines and their components with an understanding of modern engineering technologies that guarantee safe consequences for the environment, society, health, economy and industry.
Module 1.
Content module 1: Regulatory framework for the technical operation of internal combustion engines.
Topic 1: Main trends in the development of marine engine building and its technical operation. Definition of the concept of ship engine maintenance and main tasks. General provisions of technical operation.
Topic 2. Safety in the operation and repair of engines. Identification of the main dangerous situations and their prevention. Threats and preventive measures against fires and exhaust gas poisoning.
Topic 3: Organisation of works on installation, operation and repair of marine engines. Preservation, storage and deconservation of marine engines.
Content module 2. Operation of internal combustion engines.
Topic 4. Preparation and commissioning. Start-up of marine engines. Maintenance of marine engines during operation and in an idle state.
Topic 5. Preparation for manoeuvres and shutdown of marine engines. Peculiarities of operation of marine engines on fuel with increased initial viscosity.
Topic 6. Performance characteristics and operating modes of marine engines.
Content module 3: Repair of marine engines.
Topic 7. Possible malfunctions in the operation of marine engines, causes and methods of their elimination.
Topic 8: Repair of parts, mechanisms and devices of marine internal combustion engines. Inspection and repair of the crankshaft, the working cylinder bushing, the working cylinder cover.
Topic 9: Inspection and repair of pistons and connecting rods, bearings, gas distribution mechanism. Repair and maintenance of fuel equipment of marine diesel engines.
Content module 4: Maintenance of internal combustion engines.
Topic 10. Maintenance of marine engines. Maintenance intervals. Diagnostics and fault detection.
Topic 11. Booster pumps, high-pressure pumps, injectors, filters, control system. Supercharging units, coolers, turbines, compressors, auxiliary units.
Topic 12: Assembly of marine engines after repair. Adjustment of marine engines. Spare parts and technical documentation.
Content module 5: Application of fuels, oils and coolants in ICE.
Topic 13. General guidelines for the use of fuels, oils and coolants. Classification of marine oil fuels. Safety and environmental requirements for the use of oil fuels. Use of alternative fuels in marine engines.
Topic 14: Classification of marine oils and lubricants. Base oils. Additives to oils and lubricants. Nomenclature, general quality requirements for engine and gear oils. Requirements of international standards.
Topic 15: Basic information about coolants. Classification and areas of application. Range of coolants. Physical and chemical properties of coolants.

Study of general principles and features of installation, operation and repair of marine engines

Determination of characteristic malfunctions of the engine and methods of their elimination
Study of methods of maintenance of marine engines during operation, starting, purging and supercharging systems

Basic principles of repair of parts, mechanisms and devices of marine internal combustion engines
Methods of defect detection and repair of engine and cylinder-piston group parts. Features of crankshaft restoration
